🧬New, reversible CRISPR method can control gene expression while leaving underlying DNA sequence unchanged: This groundbreaking method (unsurprisingly partially funded by DARPA) allows the reversible modification of gene expression. This means that the visible characteristics that genes imbue in an organism can be changed without the potential for long-lasting damage to the actual gene sequences. (1270 words)
👩🔬Physicists working with Microsoft think the universe is a self-learning computer: Every generation defines itself by the foremost field of its generation, and it would seem as if this description of the universe— one oddly similar to an ML algorithm seems to be the aptest definition of our time. It's only a matter of time till one describes our universe as a Smart Contract. (914 words)
🩸A Blood Test For Depression and Bipolar Disorder: This breakthrough further moves psychology and the study of mental illnesses from an area of mere theorization and speculation to one of empiricism and experimentation. But obviously, every breakthrough brings about some ethical issue. A lot of people have made a tendency towards neuroatypicality a part of their identity. Especially those who have known nothing else. As such it is obvious that many will question whether their elimination is the right thing. We are unironically bound for a whole lot of controversial conversation about curing mental illnesses or whether they be termed illnesses in the first place. (753 words)
