Where we are now.
I think it’s fair to say that I was overly dramatic when I claimed the apocalypse of physical spaces was near.
In fact, I was dead ass wrong.
But I did get the thing about the general adoption of masks right… and the increasing awareness of our biology and environment… and the rise in online shopping…and the subsequent death of malls.
But I was also DEFINITELY wrong about people being cautious of contact.
It’s almost as if people couldn’t WAIT to spring back into action!
While distance learning was possible, while taking exams and meetings online were all possible, people wanted more. They wanted physical contact and interpersonal meetings. You know…the really human stuff.
But that’s not the only thing taking place. We’re seeing things return if not pick-up back from the way they were in December of last year. We’re seeing Lebanon continue its protests, Hong-Kong back in her fight for autonomy, protests taking place due to the death of George Floyd… and just yesterday, we saw North Korea and South Korea clash again.
It’s all surreal!
Protests and revolutions wait for nobody apparently.
What we’ve learned.
But the pandemic taught us quite a few things.
Science is a process of contemplation… not action. The application of science is Engineering, and most of the world sucks at it.
America really has no leaders.
A lot of countries care more about GDP growth than progress. Heck, a lot of countries care more about GDP growth than their own people.
We need to think harder about antifragility and Skin In The Game.
A lot of Tech is… indeed hype. Yeah, some may talk about the Regulatory State. But nations like Taiwan and New Zealand regardless of their size succeeded primarily due to their ability to coordinate. Market heavy economies rely on companies that lack state capacity. Good tech does not replace good leadership.
Humans probably lean more towards extroversion.
We need a lot more focus on Biological engineering.
What’s next?
It… seems like we’re in for an era of global unrest. The Covid19 pandemic may have been the greatest upward redistribution of wealth ever!
China has revealed itself to have massive influence over WHO and is now fighting with India. We’re bound to see a global backlash against China.
Business may go on as usual, but work… not so much. A lot of the jobs lost due to the pandemic… may not return.
Higher Education will need to look deep at itself. People were paying upwards of 20,000 dollars for a degree through online lectures!
What all of this tells me, is that we’ve created a global economy, that has optimized itself for the wrong goals and values.
What follows next, I do not know.
What should follow next, is hopefully a massive contemplation of the way we live and run our economies.
