The all-mighty, all-solving billionaire indeed does not exist. What may exist is the prescient data-savvy billionaire who warns everyone. In this crisis, we have realized that there can be absolutely no substitute for a competent government. It is not in the power of a singular philanthropic institution, corporation or individual to tackle what is a problem at a colossal scale.
One of the most dominant headlines that permeated the pre-coronavirus internet, were the evils of Big Tech. Sure the argument about their mishandling of personal data, and inability to handle attacks on democracies worldwide still stand. However, over the past few weeks, it has become clear that Big Tech has greatly been a positive force for good.
People who found themselves on Twitter found themselves far more informed about those who didn’t. As public health officials lagged in their response, it were niche cryptocurrency and VC communities that helped spread useful information to the masses.
Going forward, our views of Big Tech, or perhaps many of our activist views will need to be considered in the context of a pandemic.
You know it too!
